Taxis are readily available in the towns, but if you're going to want to go to dinner and to the beach more than once or twice, it will probably make financial sense to rent a vehicle for at least part of your stay. USVI private taxi rates are government-regulated; a private taxi van currently costs $55 to $90 for 1-4 persons.
American drivers will have to get used to driving on the "wrong," or left, side of the road, in a car that has the steering wheel on the left side just like at home. By paying careful attention, you'll get the hang of it. Be very cautious, and try not to pass if it's at all possible.
