While you can explore Charlotte Amalie on foot, the rest of the island does not allow for much walking. Motorized transportation is a must on St. Thomas.
Taxis are readily available, but if you're going to want to go to dinner and to the beach more than once or twice, it will probably make financial sense to rent a vehicle. USVI private taxi rates are government-regulated; a private taxi van currently costs $55 to $90 for 1-4 persons.
