Tortola Transportation

Most visitors to Tortola will want to get around the island a bit to make the most of their vacation. If you plan to travel infrequently and are in a small party (i.e. 2 people), then you might choose to just use taxis; however, in most cases, we recommend getting a rental car so that you can really see all that the island has to offer. There are a number of rental car agencies in Tortola. You'll need a temporary BVI driver's license, available through your car rental agency forUS$10, and your valid home license. Keep in mind that we drive on the left side of the road in Tortola! Many steering wheels are also on the left (the "American" side). Seatbelts are required by law. If you plan to drive across the island's interior, you may want to get a four-wheel drive vehicle.

You may want to take advantage of the calm waters surrounding Tortola and its proximity to the other Virgin Islands by ferrying to another island for the day. Ferry service is frequent, dependable, and affordable, with the maximum rate around $25 per adult round trip. Ferries depart from Road Town, Soper's Hole, and Beef Island. Ferry schedules can be viewed at http://www.bvivacations.com/Ferry.html.
