Island Oasis St. John - An Island Oasis
St. John has an enviable reputation as one of the best Caribbean tourist destinations. This reputation is well deserved and is certainly based on more than its abundant white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. With a population of just over four thousand and covering only twenty square miles, the island is culturally diverse and artistically vibrant. It is a truly pristine place and its residents embrace a strong belief in land preservation and history. Its National Park is a virtual treasure trove of sunbathing, hiking, and ecological tours, while the park's marine areas offer kayaking, sailing, and world-class diving. It really gets to one's soul...

Excursions St. John Excursions
On our trip we were lucky enough to catch the Coral Bay Thanksgiving Regatta. Hosted by St. John each Thanksgiving, this unique one-day sailing event attracts a diverse group of seamen. Even though we’re more used to the Heineken Regatta in St. Martin, this was a treat that we were just not expecting upon our arrival.

National Park tours are also very popular as the majesty and beauty of St. John is always on full display. You can choose independent or guided walking tours or a bus/jeep tour. If you choose the latter - as we did - you'll find the drivers take a special pride in the beauty of St. John. Miss Lucy Smith, whose wagon can be identified by cow horns entwined with flowers on the hood, is a well-known personality who is so popular that you'll need to make a reservation with her.

St. John’s convenient location also enables guests to easily visit the neighboring islands of St. Thomas, Tortola and Virgin Gorda as well as the many smaller islands in the USVI and BVI chains. For those wishing to venture off island, we recommend that you take the ferry to quiet Virgin Gorda and visit the Baths. We visited for an entire day and both adults and children alike were left speechless at the rock formations and whirlpools. It was simply an amazing day of relaxing family fun in the sun.

Dining & Restaurants St. John Dining & Restaurants
Having spent so many years in St. Martin - the culinary capital of the Caribbean - we find St. John’s dining scene surprisingly casual yet with enough options to satisfy everyone.

For a quiet evening of sophisticated French food we were very satisfied at Asolare. The dishes were beautifully presented and the food was fresh and the menu varied. When in a more playful mood, try the Fish Trap for fried specialties and an upbeat, quirky atmosphere.

If you prefer a quite yet gourmet night of fine dining in your villa, Passion Fruit is an excellent choice. They catered our farewell dinner at Coco de Mer and provisioned and expertly prepared everything from sushi to filet mignon. It really was delightfully presented, pleasantly served and perfectly proportioned.

Here’s a quick note about spending Thanksgiving on St. John. Our traditional Thanksgiving dinner was easily adapted on St. John. Every vegetable and side dish our family enjoys was prepared from the items in local stores. (And most importantly we didn’t have to ship a frozen turkey from the States as we’ve done in past years.)
