Villa Spotlight: Coco de Mer
Each year the Thanksgiving holiday takes our family to the tropics. Usually to popular St. Martin, but for our 2007 trip we decided on St. John’s north shore, and the legendary villa, Coco de Mer.
St. John is a favorite destination of so many of our customers, and being there several times a year for inspections, what better reason to spend a week and create some lasting family memories. Several friends from England and St. Martin joined our party to quietly discover the untouched magic of this island gem.
A quick note… For those of us familiar with the island, the frenzied ferry dock and left-hand side driving is almost second nature. But for first time visitors to St. John, getting off the ferry and proceeding out of town can be a bit tricky as you may find yourself driving in circles before you catch on. But no worries – if you get lost the warm and friendly St. Johnians are more than happy to guide you on your way.
Now back to our trip. Despite being a bit challenged by unnerving curves, endless hills, and steep valleys we finally arrived at the gated entrance to Coco de Mer. When we entered I wondered if they had sent in the sugar birds for our arrival as they were swirling about. As we continued past the gate the private drive painted a wonderful picture on a canvas of orchids, lilies, and jasmine while also ensuring a sense of belonging and safety.
When the sprawling villa first came into sight, our collective breath was taken away. We explored like little children on a “treasure hunt” forgetting for a time that some of us regularly visit and stay in luxury villas all around the world. Terraces abounded throughout the house and every nook and cranny had outcroppings of interesting, outstanding blooms. The stonework, typical only to St. John’s most special properties, amazed us – as it seems to do on each and every trip. We always marvel at the time it must take to create this magical backdrop and only hope it is deeply appreciated by the chosen few who temporarily reside within the walls of Coco de Mer.
After we were settled, we quickly found that relaxing by the pool is probably the best thing you can do at the house. The views are stunning from every angle and the hot tub - hidden amongst variegated palms and jasmines - provides privacy from the pool deck and bedrooms alike.
There is a pathway from the pool area that leads you down the hillside where you eventually reach a small private beach. The walk takes about ten minutes and is not advised for those who cannot tolerate a cardiovascular workout (or have to carry small children on the way back up!)
Cozy little getaway spots throughout the property invite couples to slip away on their own. Gateways, pathways and archways are around every corner all gentle illuminated to further enhance the already romantic island ambiance.
In contrast, the great room is a comfortable and inviting gathering area for the whole gang to be together for socializing. The open floor plan has the kitchen adjacent to this gathering spot making meals and entertaining fun and easy. We had out final dinner catered here and could not have been more pleased – it was certainly large enough for our group of eleven. (See below for a review on Passion Fruit, our caterers.)
The spacious bedrooms are sequestered in little cottages throughout the property. Each bedroom at Coco de Mer is equal and affords every ounce of luxury and privacy. Each is appointed with precious hardwoods, exceptional linens, and comfortable mattresses that assure a great night’s sleep. All have a view of the Caribbean, a full bathroom and a flat screen television. Take note, all bedrooms open to the outdoors and are separate from the great room; keep this in mind if traveling with small children.
All in all we must say that the new owners have really thought of everything – many times over. Thinking back now we could go on and on about this wonderful house and our equally wonderful vacation. But for now we leave Coco de Mer to you with the invitation to visit and create your own lasting memories.
